Located in the mountains of Asahi-cho of Hamada City and near the border between Hiroshima and Shimane prefectures, "Kominka-chaya, Suginagasako" is found in a village that had flourished in the Edo period as a site of tatara iron production. Around the residence are the stone-supported rice terraces of "Tsukawa no Tanada." Suginagasako is also built on a magnificent stone wall that resembles the remains of a castle, and is a 200-year-old traditional residence whose traces of its history can be seen everywhere.
The program affiliate Mr. Muratake had opened a veranda cafe 6 years ago as part of local community-development efforts, but in March of 2017, he launched rural tourism activities here under a new name.
You will find farmland and handmade fish ponds around the house, vintage agricultural machinery and equipment from the past displayed in the entrance hall, and numerous other unusual items just by walking around the house. The friendly Muratake couple will tell you many interesting stories and even their two adorable dogs will come to welcome you in the garden.
A river runs through the front of the house, and it is so peaceful here that you can hear it murmuring even from within the house. In this relaxing space where you can simply let loose, you will lose track of time as you immerse yourself in the sounds of nature.
