Harvesting makomodake (water bamboo), a special Satoyama product in autumn
"Adventure Forest Tenba" is located in the mountain village of Sannoji, Unnan City. Here, makomodake (water bamboo) is cultivated under pesticide-free conditions. In the Izumo region, the word "makomo" is widely known as a reference to the "Makomo ritual" at the Izumo Taisha shrine, with this "divine grass" covering the main approach to the shrine which divinities travel along. This paddy-like grass "makomo" has a bulging root section which is known as "makomodake." The harvest season for this vegetable is from late September to early October. At the harvest event, the collected makomodake is made into tempura and other dishes and shared among the guests present. You can also experience the sport of "tree climbing" in the hill behind by using a rope.
Today's special activity
The harvest season for makomodake is from September to October. The root section of makomo is cut off using a sickle. A harvest event is also held.
